Banksy
Banksy is the pseudonym of a "guerrilla"
street artist known for his controversial, and often politically themed,
stencilled pieces. He is a United Kingdom-based graffiti artist, political
activist, film director, and painter. His satirical street art combine dark
humour with graffiti executed in a characteristic stencilling technique. Works
with political and social commentary have been featured on streets, walls, and
bridges of cities throughout the world.
Banksy's artwork is characterized by striking
images, often combined with slogans. His work often engages political themes,
satirically critiquing war, capitalism, hypocrisy and greed. Common subjects
include rats, apes, policemen, members of the royal family, and children. His
controversial work causes a lot of debate. He uses satire to ridicule members
of authority, war and conflicts, the commercialisation and materialisation of
today’s society among other things. Banksy uses street art to communicate to
society what he believes is what is wrong and what should be changed.
